How Prevalent is Abuse?
Domestic abuse is held as a deep secret by those impacted for many reasons. As a result the general public remains unaware of the prevalence of the issue. Research Shows:
- One out of three women in the United States will be abused. – Reported in American Psychological Association, “Violence and the Family: Report of the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family” (1996), 10.
- Domestic abuse ranks as the leading cause of injury to women from age 15 to 44 and is more common than injury due to traffic accidents, muggings, and cancer deaths combined. – Reported in Antonio C. Novello et al., “From the Surgeon General, US Public Health Service, Journal of the American Medical Association" 267 (1992): 3132.
- Domestic abuse not only impacts the secular society, but impacts homes professing a religious affiliation at the same rate. – Lee Bowker, “Religious Victims and Their Religious Leaders in Abuse and Religion" Mass Lexington Books, (1988), 231-31.
